Steven Gama “Immigrant Farm Workers and Industrial Medicine”
September 1, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

In 1959, shortly after graduating from Loyola Medical School and completing his residency at Los Angeles County Hospital, Carlos H. Gama, M.D. set up his office in the Colonia next to the Bank of A. Levy.
His patients were largely immigrant farm laborers from the Ventura County area. As a result, Dr. Gama was in a position to give his patients’ employers some practical advice when it came to decreasing injury rates and subsequent workers’ compensation claims. For example, Dr. Gama was able to peg the short-handled hoe as a major contributor in the epidemic of back injuries among field workers.
Dr. Gama’s son, Steven—who, himself, claims more than 30 years of risk management experience (including a stint with industry leader 3M Company)—will be telling a story that is both harrowing and inspiring. He will also be drawing from his own involvement with his father’s practice as he traces the history of worker’s compensation, industrial medicine, and risk management in relation to Ventura County immigrant farm workers.
